Why do knights need armor?
In battle, the knight had a hard time. Knights were helped by squires - young men who were just preparing to become knights. Armor is not the most comfortable robe, so the knights put on a thick quilted camisole and pants under them.
Until the beginning of the XIII century, knights wore chain mail - a shirt, "woven" of metal rings. Then the armor was made of metal plates. Towards the end of the Middle Ages, knights were shackled in armor from head to toe.
Japanese knights were called samurai. Warriors all over the world used bows and arrows. Before the battle, the samurai always washed, so that after death he was not ashamed to go to heaven.
Why was the castle surrounded by a moat?
A moat is a deep and wide ditch filled with water. They surrounded the castle in order to block the road to the invaders. Guests were allowed to the gate via a drawbridge. And when the castle was attacked by enemies, the bridge was raised.
Surrounding the castle, the invaders waited for the people who took refuge inside the fortress walls to run out of water and food. When this happened, the castle defenders surrendered. In the Middle Ages, protective stone walls were built around settlements and cities. The city of Greater Zimbabwe in South Africa built the Shona people in the 11th century. Pueblo Bonito (the largest of the “palace” villages) built the Anasaz people between 950 and 1300.
In the 14th century, firearms appeared in Europe - guns. Capturing the castle has become easier - heavy cores destroyed walls.
