Every creature on Earth has a specific lifespan. But which of the creatures is able to live longer than all?
Who lives the longest?
Red sea urchins are considered creatures capable of living the greatest amount of time. This type of invertebrate can be found at shallow depths of the western coast of America and is easy to recognize due to its bright color.
Having been born, hedgehogs quickly grow and develop, after a month the individual is considered an adult. For a couple of years, they reach a size of 4 cm, after which the growth process slows down sharply: with each subsequent year, the creation grows only a millimeter. However, the growth process does not stop and lasts forever.
Initially, scientists thought that red hedgehogs could live for about 15 years, but not so long ago, an individual was found on which stood a marker left by zoologists in 1805. And despite its 200-year-old age, the organism of the creature has not aged at all: it is able to produce offspring and conduct normal activities.
More thorough studies have shown that the body of the red hedgehogs does not wear out at all or does it very slowly. In theory, if you create favorable conditions around a creature, it will live forever.
Hedgehog lifestyle
Sea urchins live at the bottom, and can be found at a depth of up to 7 km. They move on the surface and eat everything they meet in their path. Their body is able to digest algae, flesh and even sand.
Interesting fact: small underwater creatures can use sea urchins as protection against predators. For example, mollusks squeeze between needles and hide from other creatures, literally traveling on their “friend”.
Sea urchins can use crevices as dwellings or burrow into the ground. Thanks to sharp needles, they easily make holes in the sand and dig into the desired depth.
Red sea urchins are considered champions in longevity. Their body practically does not age, which is why even centuries-old individuals are able to perform the same functions as young animals. It is believed that under favorable conditions they are able to live forever.
